How To Make Turkuaz Kitchen Shepherd’s Pie
- Brown the Meat: Heat the olive oil in a medium pan over medium-high heat, add the ground beef, and brown it for 4-5 minutes while smashing with a wooden spoon.
- Cook the Vegetables: Add chopped onions and cook for 2-3 minutes. Then add carrot, garlic, celery, and tomato paste and sauté for another 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add salt, pepper, oregano, parsley, and thyme and stir well.
- Add Liquid Ingredients: Add Worcestershire sauce and beef broth, stir, and bring to a simmer. When the sauce begins to bubble, reduce the heat to low, cover the pan with a lid, and cook for 4-5 minutes. Add the frozen peas and cook for 4-5 minutes until the peas are cooked. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Prepare the Mashed Potatoes: In a large pot, boil potatoes until tender. Remove the skins and press the potatoes through a potato ricer or use a potato masher to mash them and return them to the pan. Add butter, warm milk, mozzarella, Parmesan, salt, and pepper and mix well.
- Assemble the Pie: Pour the meat filling into a 9×9 inch baking dish or a 9-inch cast-iron pan and spread it evenly. Top with mashed potatoes and gently spread them out evenly. Add some Parmesan cheese on top.
- Bake: Bake for 20-25 minutes until the top is golden brown.
- Let it Rest: Let it sit for 15-20 minutes before serving.
Recipe Tips
- Properly Brown the Meat: Make sure the ground beef or lamb is fully browned before adding the vegetables. This step adds depth to the flavor.
- Evenly Mash the Potatoes: To get smooth mashed potatoes, use a potato ricer or thoroughly mash them. Lumpy potatoes can affect the final texture.
- Simmer the Filling: Let the meat filling simmer for at least 10 minutes. This allows the flavors to blend well and makes the meat tender.
- Rest Before Serving: After baking, let the Shepherd’s Pie sit for 15-20 minutes. This helps it set and makes it easier to serve.
